Sanford K. Okura

Sanford K. Okura received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Stanford Law School in 1976, after graduating from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in 1971, with high honors. He has been serving as a court appointed arbitrator since 1991, has served as president and director of the Big Island Estate Planning Council, and is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys as well as the Probate and Estate Planning Section and the Elder Law Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association. He is the author of the Estate Planning Insights column in The Hawaii Herald, is co-author of “Medicaid vs. Long Term Care Insurance Planning in Hawaii” (National Business Institute, 2004), and co-author of “Practical Medicare and Medicaid Skills in Hawaii” (HalfMoon LLC, 2004). He specializes in Estate Planning and Elder Law (Medicaid Planning), including protecting assets from probate, estate taxes and nursing home costs. He frequently presents lectures on Estate Planning and Medicaid Planning. He has the gift of being able to explain complex legal concepts in simple, understandable language.

His children say he has no hobbies. His hobby is invisible: he enjoys learning the best ways to improve one’s quality of life physically, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially and financially. He has been happily married to Nancy since 1972.
